Precautions to take when you have a COVID-19 patient at home

Are you unaware of the precautions to take if you or any other family member is Covid positive? There is a rising alarm of anxiety and fear ever since the wake of the second wave of the pandemic, especially when there is a Covid-19 patient at home. Despite being overwhelmed by the same, one should be able to encounter the situation in the most effective manner. They should know the precautions to take and make sure to take the basic precautions to prevent being affected by it and help the affected from recovering it at the earliest. 

Primarily, when a person is tested positive for coronavirus, they are advised to isolate themselves from others in the house and preferably stay in a separate room until recovery. From using masks and sanitizers to taking health supplements and eating healthy food, there are multiple things that one should mandatorily consider when there is a Covid-19 patient at home. 

Following are the precautions to take if someone in your house is Covid-19 positive-

1. All residents in the house should wear a mask. 

If anyone at home is diagnosed with coronavirus, everyone residing in the house must wear a mask all the time. This is one important way to avoid getting affected by the virus. Moreover, while using a mask, one more precautions to take is to avoid touching the mask’s surface with bare hands. In addition to this, one must make sure that they cover the nose, mouth and chin while wearing one.

Ensure that you wash your hands with hand wash before using a mask and after taking it off. After using a mask, keep it in a plastic cover to avoid getting it switched with others in the house. It is highly recommended to keep a couple of extra masks with themselves and to either dispose or wash the used masks to get rid of the germs if any. 

Masks must be disposed of after the continuous use of 8 hours. The N-95 mask is mostly preferred by doctors. Therefore, the patient and the person who takes care of the patient must use an N-95 mask as well as use gloves to ensure more safety. 

2. Use a sanitizer  

The commonly touched surfaces like the door knobs, switch boards, remote, table top etc must be sanitised regularly. Everyone at the house is also expected to sanitise their hands frequently. 

3. Wash your hands  

Wash your hands with soap and water even if it isn’t visibly dirty. Another one of the most important precautions to take is washing your hands frequently. It is very important to maintain self-hygiene, particularly during the time of the pandemic. So, take time and wash your hands properly for about 40 to 60 seconds to get rid of all the germs, namely after using the washroom, before eating food, blowing one’s nose, coughing or even sneezing, for that matter.

4. Wash the utensils and clothes separately. 

The patient diagnosed with the disease must use separate utensils for the intake of food, water and medicines. To not get mixed with the utensils used by others at home, keep them separately. This will help to avoid confusion. Apart from the utensils, the patients’ clothes must also be washed separately.  While washing both utensils and clothes, one should use gloves as a part of safety measures. In addition to this, hot water is highly recommended to clean them.  

5. Take care of the patient. 

Patients who develop severe symptoms like breathing problems should seek medical help. To the contrary, mild symptoms of coronavirus like fever, sore throat or body ache can be treated at home. Proper care and intake of healthy food and plenty of fluids will help to boost the immunity of the patient. Temperature and oxygen saturation of the patient must be monitored at least twice a day. To keep a check on the oxygen saturation of the patient, using an oximeter would be beneficial. Apart from this, steam inhalation is a widely practiced home remedy to prevent any breathing difficulties. Therefore, to ensure fast recovery, patients are highly recommended to perform warm water gargles and steam inhalation daily.   

Precautions to take when you have a COVID-19 patient at home

Patients should sleep at least for 8 hours and eat nutritious food. The patient is also supposed to take medicines and health supplements suggested by the doctor on time. Moreover, they should keep in touch with a physician and communicate immediately in case of any emergencies. All Covid-19 patients needn’t be symptomatic. Therefore, patients tested positive for the virus, both symptomatic and asymptomatic should isolate themselves for at least 17 days or till the date of recovery. 

Mental health of the patient is as important as their physical health. Being isolated in a room for more than a couple of weeks is tiring and can incite sadness or hopelessness. Therefore, the person taking care of the patient must keep a close check on the patient’s mental health and should encourage, motivate or boost them with confidence when needed.

The above-mentioned requisites must be kept in mind and should be implemented in the most effective manner when there is a Covid-19 patient at home.
