Tips and tactics to improve your child’s handwriting

Introduction

The ability to write legibly is well appreciated. With the rising usage of digital media, children’s focus has diverted from improving handwriting to enhancing keyboarding and typing skills. The children are not to blame for its the need of the hour. But what’s disappointing is the fact that we tend to deny the importance of handwriting.

Why is it essential to improve handwriting?

Developing legible and neat handwriting is a part of improving your kid’s motor skills. Despite the advanced technology, handwriting still plays a crucial role in an individual’s life. From jotting down a grocery list to attending written examinations for formal assessments, handwriting still holds profound significance in our day-to-day lives.

Several research studies indicate the advantages of writing over typing. Learning through writing is said to have a more significant impact on the child’s brain, especially when it comes to memory retention.

1. Make it exciting and entertaining.

Children may find writing sessions boring if they don’t develop an interest in them. So let’s get started from there. Help your kids develop a passion for jotting down on paper and notebooks. Instead of giving them random words to copy down, ask them to solve word puzzles or even play the game of hangman with them.

Another way to make it exciting is by giving them fun exercises like listing down ten words related to a particular theme like school or Christmas celebrations. It will boost their creativity and improve handwriting.

2. Practise Practise Practise

Consistency and patience play a significant role in achieving excellence. The handwriting of an individual is distinct and unique. With constant practice, students will gain perfection. Set aside some time daily and sit with your child to help them improve handwriting.

3. Serene and peaceful study environment

Artists prefer a calm and silent atmosphere to work. An interruption-free atmosphere will facilitate creative thinking and improves the efficiency of the work produced. Similarly, writing is a form of art. Chose a study-friendly corner in your house for your kids to practice their writing.

Make sure they are not disturbed by intense noise and sound. Other factors to be taken care of are the posture and the back support while they write. Make arrangements for an appropriate study table, chair, and a soft and yielding cushion to ensure the same.

4. Fine-tune your child’s motor skills

Motor skills in handwriting refer to the coordination of hand and eye muscles while writing. Control, coordination, balance, and agility are essential while writing anything on a sheet of paper. To hone these skills, parents can let their kids engage in small activities like setting the table for dinner, folding the clothes, clay-modeling, arranging the toys, making the bedsheet, brushing their teeth, cutting paper, using cutlery, etc.

Non-writing activities like these will enhance your child’s focus, patience, dexterity, and concentration. It will aid in improving handwriting and help your kids achieve more perfection in the tasks they perform.

5. Buy them the right set of stationery.

Buying your kids the right set of stationery items can evoke a sense of interest in them. While buying pens and pencils, choose one that wouldn’t require your child to apply much pressure while writing. Such stationary products can improve the grip as well. All of us have childhood stories to talk about our favorite cartoons.

Being gifted with stationaries with decal prints and stickers of our all-time favorite cartoon characters would have been one of our childhood fascinations. Similarly, giving your child such cute and aesthetic notebooks with captivating labels and prints will attract their attention. It will trigger their excitement to get started with the journey of handwriting practice sessions.

At the same time, make sure that you buy four-line notebooks instead of plain ones. It is to facilitate the ample spacing between letters and the proportional sizing of alphabets.

Practise is the key to perfection. With enough zeal, practice, and a constant dose of encouragement, you can build up your child’s handwriting profile.
