Reasons why you shouldn’t pressure your children

Introduction

All parents want their children to excel and succeed in their life. In other terms, one can address it as indeed perfection. Some parents let the children be the way they want to be, giving them the freedom to explore their strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and their passion. But to the contrary, few other parents end up forcing their children to take the path they don’t wish to take or may persuade them to put in more effort without realizing how herculean the task is. This may end up putting too much pressure on the kids to perform well to meet the expectations of their parents.

The difference between discipline and pressure

What is the definite difference between the two distinct terms discipline and pressure? To discipline means to teach the child the basic life skills and the moral set of disciplinary standards and ethical behavior. For instance, if a child refuses to study his/her academic lessons due to mere negligence and laziness, let’s say that the child needs to be rebuked.

Even while chiding them, practice the tips and tactics to develop disciplinary standards within them rather than letting them experience the slightest tinge of pressure. Conversely, if the child has too much on the plate and is still asked to take up more, it shows the pure implication of putting too much pressure on the kids.

Why shouldn’t you pressurize children?

1. Mental Illness

why you should not pressure your child

Being under constant pressure will reduce the stress management skills in the child. They will most likely develop anxiety disorders. Acute pressure and stress will hence pave way for other mental health issues. Several suicide cases have also been reported across the globe for reasons of the pressure felt by the students to meet others’ expectations in life. Acknowledge the consequences and try your best to not pressurize your children ever again.

2. Increased chances of cheating

Kids who feel pressuredby their parents to score more for their class tests often end up cheating during their exams. The probability of copying the answers from other student’s answer sheets or bits of hidden papers is relatively higher. Why does this happen? When under pressure, all they care about is the end goal or the mark of achievement.

During this phase, the kids often fail to enjoy the entire process of learning and even end up forgetting the true intention of learning. So, all parents must motivate their kids to perform well by encouraging them to explore their inner potential and should never pressurize them to achieve something that lies beyond their capabilities.

3. Low participation

When a kid experiences too much pressure to excel, it might instill within them the constant fear of losing. Will I end up disappointing my parents? What if I can’t become the best among my peers? These thoughts keep dwelling and finally, the kids refuse to participate in various events, competitions, and other co-curricular activities. Here the core reason for low participation points to the haunting fear of losing and disappointing others.

4. Sleep deprivation

Sleep deprivation is a commonly seen symptom among the students who push themselves to achieve more than that lies beyond the threshold of their abilities. For instance, a student preparing for their final exams might end up sitting late at night to study.

Incorporating late-night study sessions with a little amount of sleep would have taken birth ever since the day they started feeling the pressure to do better. But this might end up deteriorating their sleep quality and might even make their study sessions less productive.

5. Low self-esteem

Parental pressure gives rise to low self-esteem issues. When being told to excel more, students start doubting their capabilities and end up questioning their potential. In these situations, they might even give up on what they are good at due to a deteriorating confidence level.

Conclusion

Don’t pressurize your children to do anything, but rather train them to master the skill set or achieve the respective goals through constant motivation, encouragement, and support. Instill within them the urge to succeed by making them aware of the bright future awaiting them, instead of reminding them of the dreadful consequences if they fail to do so.
